Key details emerging for PWHPA league

At the moment, we are on schedule for having 13 professional teams in North America next season. That translates to roughly 160 pro women's hockey players on the ice in 2023-24. That number is something to be excited about.

On Feb. 23, Hailey Salvian of The Athletic reported that the PWHPA has organized a formal union - something the PHF does not have - and is negotiating a Collective Bargaining Agreement with its ownership group. That investment group is Billie Jean King Enterprises and The Mark Walter Group and a CBA between these parties would be historic. It would also be an undeniable precursor to a league.

On Feb. 25, Jeff Marek of SportsNet reported that a PWHPA league is indeed close. We've heard rumblings of the league launching before but this does feel different. Building off of Salvian's report, Marek unearthed that he believes that either by the PWHPA Championship Weekend (Mar. 10-12 in South California) or the 2023 World Championship (Apr. 5 in Brampton, ON), a formal announcement of a league will be arriving.

  • Six teams: four in Canada, two in the United States
  • A projected season starting in late October
  • The league will be the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL)
  • PWHPA would be the name of the union

The PWHPA will be back in action for a Washington D.C. showcase Mar. 2-5.
